By fighting in the crusades, many man were able to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Christ.

no, the pope didnt legitimize it, but it still happened, and many officials encouraged or stodd by while it did. thats why i think the crusades where evil, despite their intentions.

i thought the fourth one was the last one? or are you counting the indiana jones movie?

There were 9 Crusades by the typical enumeration. And I still think it is unfair and disingenuous for people to make sweeping generalities about the Crusades without knowing anything about them other than that the general unchallenged social construct that they are "bad."

I'm totally for educating myself on various facts, and I know there are tons of misinformation out there being thrown around like with the 50 million, but what about what actually happened? Not exactly a sunshine story that either? And how do we defend against the bad rep it gives? I mean even this little thread has showed that faithful Catholics disagree how justified they were.

And stop being lame or I'll tase you. :annoyed:

Instead of talking about crusades, why don't we re-found the Knights Templar in order to defend pilgrims going to the Holy Land against Muslim terrorists? :sword:

Good reads on the topic:

God's Battalions: The Case for the Crusades (Hardcover)

The Lost History of Christianity: The Thousand-Year Golden Age of the Church in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia--and How It Died (Hardcover)
[/quote]

I just placed holds on both of these. :)
