If she's bothersome but no particular threat, she could have Aspberger's Syndrome or something, and just not have a clue about appropriateness - who to approach, how, when, when to stop, can't read end-of-conversation signals - that kind of thing.

I would not rule out the possibility that this is part of some spammer's scheme. IM is getting a lot of those these days.

It's terribly unlikely. She's been at this for years.

I think I'd just help her with her math.

It seems like a lot of people have troubles with math. I was an electrician for a couple of years and it was an apprenticeship that included classes. We had to do a little simple High School algebra in the class. The teacher gave us a math test and it took me a matter of minutes to finish. I looked around the class and saw everybody sweating it, so I double checked it. Then I took it up to the teacher and he suggested that I check the answers again. So I did, and I handed it in -- and left the class all by myself. When we got back the test results the next class I was the only one to get one hundred percent.

But my father was an aeronautical engineer, and my younger brother got a PhD in math and teaches at Stanford. So if anybody needs help with a math question, either I can help or my brother can (And in case anybody wonders he's married with two kids).

It's not so much "help her with math" as it is "do her math for her" and when you say no, she gets all mad. Not quite the same thing...
