Thy Geekdom Come
The liberal media liked to say that Daneels was papabile because they liked thinking about the possibility. From their perspective, the vote isn't guided by the Holy Spirit, but by politics alone. You could see why they'd want to promote a liberal. First, the thought of it makes them feel all warm and tingly inside. Second, they'd be able to say, "told you so! We knew this was the direction the Church was headed in after Vatican II! Yay us!" Of course, that's just silly.
Gregorius
So I understand that Cardinals who are 80+ are ineligible to vote, but do they still have to be there? I'm confused.
JimR-OCDS
FYI the youngest Pope was Benedict IX according to the Catholic Encyclopedia
The nephew of his two immediate predecessors, Benedict IX was a man of very different character to either of them. He was a disgrace to the Chair of Peter. Regarding it as a sort of heirloom, his father Alberic placed him upon it when a mere youth, not, however, apparently of only twelve years of age (according to Raoul Glaber, Hist., IV, 5, n. 17. Cf. V, 5, n. 26), but of about twenty (October, 1032).
Jim
