Has Anyone Ever Tried To Convert You?

I didn't really care about my Catholic faith until I was suckered into attending a non-denom christmas retreat in Nashville my freshman year of college. It was 2 grueling days of having no way to defend myself but deep down suddenly realizing how right my faith was...and how wrong they were...

My faith life has been much clearer and my relationship with Christ much more intimate since that experience. Funny how those protestants actually got what they wanted for me (to have a genuine relationship with Christ) without pulling me away from Catholicism.

Another time that comes to mind is when I was still a Baptist. I went to my own church and had this old man give me a tract about needing to accept Jesus.

Oh and the one dude once at the university who was standing there handing out literature and screaming at us. I politely took some, and told him I wasn't able to talk because I was on my way to (ironically) Deviant Behavior. He didn't want to accept that, but for once Campus Security was doing their jobs. Once he made the motion like he was going to grab me, he was very well grilled about his lack of permits.

Come to think of it, someone did try to convert me once. At work!

This guy came up to order something, and he slipped me a dollar. I was polite and said, "you dropped this." He seemed taken aback, but after he got his food, he said, "please take it...please?" So I took it and...it was a dollar all right, but it had a tract wrapped in it. I was so offended that this man thought he could bribe me to convert to his faith. I put the dollar to good use and threw the tract away.

When I worked Sundays at McDonalds we always had people handing tracts through the Drive Thru Window and leaving them in the bathrooms. My personal favorite was the one that looked like a real $20 bill, but then it turned out to be counterfeit and have a message about needing Saved on the back.

So close-minded. Although smart since he realized that he's lost before then. Interesting he doesn't believe in the Trail of Blood though.

You've seen a lot of action.

You know, I've never actually met a Baptist to my knowledge who even believes in the Trail of Blood. At least not in ministry positions...

And thanks, better this type of action than some others. ;) I live in the northern edge of the Bible Belt. Everyone wants to convert everyone.

 We had that happen too! Someone handed an employee a 100 dollar bill...but it ended up being a tract. He threw it down and said, "It's a FAKE!" I laughed so hard that day.

Oh my gosh! I really have little love for those things. I saw a hundy in the gutter once. I honestly thought all my Christmases had come at once because all I had to get me through the week was half a bag of stale porridge and 20c. Our money down here is made of a kind of plastic paper, and it was made of the same stuff. Even had that see through thing on it!! I was so like "THANK YOU JESUS!!" And then when I turned it over to brush the grit off it I noticed something a little off... a phone number... and the phrase "Do you save your money? Has Jesus saved your soul?"

Not. Im. Pressed. :annoyed:

There's a guy that stands across the street from my college every day from like noon to 3 distributing the JW magazine... He asked me if I would like one once but usually he just stands there by the bus stops and the mall parking lot. He's very sweet though... he usually gets pushes the signal button for me because my hands are always really full. I don't use the bus anymore though, so I haven't seen him for a while.

Oh yes! Every day for around 4 yrs.

I worked in a Hospital for the Aged which was run by the Salvation Army, and the Managerial Staff were all Salvationists, as were most of the Nurses. There were two of us who were not of their religion, and they never stopped trying to convert us (but in a nice way) until the day we left. We were invited to pot luck dinners at their Citadels, concerts with a definite "Army" flavour, we always had a Scripture reading before the residents' meals, and if one of us was on duty, the task of doing the reading always fell to us. I think I found my way around the King James version pretty quickly, doing those readings. In so much as they tried to win us over, they were very respectful of our beliefs, and I think a SA Colonel summed it up beautifully one day when he said, "we believe in God just as you do, we just see Him in different ways". If I could ever contemplate not being a Catholic, then I would have to say that the Salvation Army would have to be the religion I would choose, because they practice Christianity in a way that is all encompassing - irrespective of race or creed, in a way that Jesus taught. "Love one another, as I have loved you."
