The real fun is in the hunt.
My husband is a collector, and he agrees wholeheartedly with this statement. He collects military history books, as well as games (primarily wargames). He's been collecting for more than 25 years now, and is always trolling around for new and interesting additions to his collections. I am personally not much of a collector, although I do have a deep love of fun kitchen gadgets, and cookbooks. I also have several original artworks I've picked up over the years, although none new since moving to Minnesota. I had several friends in the arts community when I lived in Indiana and just haven't cultivated those friendships here.
CatherineM
I heard that there are only 30 copies left of the first edition of my book. The second edition is coming out soon I guess. The reason I found out is that some woman showed up at our door to get me to sign a copy at 8am, and gave me a fifty for my favorite charity. It was pretty surreal. And yeah, there was real tabasco sauce in the bottle. Thats the kind of stuff she collects.
Those come in MREs. Maybe more often... it might only be a spoon, but I sincerely believe I need it. lol I also buy cookbooks. (I'm currently on the prowl for a Scottish cookbook, if anyone knows of a good one point me to it!) I collect recipes and cookbooks more than anything. As long as I cook from the book at least once I think it's worth it. haha When I was a kid my sisters and I had a foreign money collection, but I quit that a looong time ago. I can't think of anything else I really ever actually collected deliberately... I may have accumulated several of a type of thing over time, but it was never a deliberate gathering of items. I also have a collection of foreign coins that belonged to my dad. He wasn't allowed to talk about the things he did that were still classified, but he picked up a coin everywhere he went. I'm not sure why he was in China in '47 or Argentina in the 70's, and I'm not sure I want to know either.
Luigi
I used to collect sentences. They had to be from printed media (not just overheard at a party or something) and they had to be bizarre - the kind of thing that, taken out of context, would make the reader wonder, "In what possible situation could this have been uttered?" I don't have time to keep up with it any more, and besides, so many people say so many bizarre things these days ....

laetitia crucis
In third grade I was determined that one day I would become a Disney supervising character animator. (I guess I had high ambitions.) I wrote the Walt Disney Animation Studios asking how I could accomplish this and they wrote back and sent materials on what they require for their artists' portfolios and their internship program. From that packet, I immediately began planning my future education and life. From this, flowed my collection of Disney animation books. So, I would "study" those books and practice drawing in that style for hours. My collection ended my senior year in high school when I finally decided to become a music performance major. I still have this one somewhere: It rocks my socks. And this was one of my favorites:

There are some books I have that I have only done one or two recipes out of, even though I've made them several times. I have a couple that I bought solely because they were books my mom had when I was growing up.
My sister collects cookbooks too (sorry, no Scottish ones) so at Christmas I wanted to give her my copy of the Boston Cooking School cook book from 1910 but it was in the States, so I searched in old book shops here and found one that was almost as good, an Australian Cooking cook book from the the 1930s, and it even show the layour for a "modern kitchen" and is so very much aimed at the traditional wife and mother! My sister loves it, and the other book is on its way from the States now, so she will have both. I carried the Boston one from convent to convent for three years and then finally decided that I was never going to cook from it, so had it put into storage at my brother's house. Of course that is when I need it! My sister actually cooks from her books!

I once read a short story by Stephen King, and the main character was a traveling salesman who kept a notebook with a collection of sentences he found written on the inside of bathroom stalls. There were some pretty neat (not trashy, just neat and strange) sentences in there.

TeresaBenedicta
At first, I couldn't think of anything I really collect... and then it hit me. I collect books. Love them. All books. Do not take me to a bookstore. I'm a bibliophile. Oh! And I collect t-shirts from softball tournaments. From age 11-19 I played competitive fastpitch softball, which meant that I traveled around the country playing in tournaments. I would always buy a t-shirt or sweatshirt from everywhere I played. I have enough to fill a full dresser!
