Ed Normile
The general attitude is that specifically in the case of going to haunted places, it's about intention. Ouija boards, tarot cards, seances, etc., are different obviously, which you obviously recognize.
Hmm, if we believe that there are ghosts that for some reason, either unsettled business or an attachment to a place, decide to stay here of their own will, I guess that would just discount our whole religion, all christian religion for that matter. We are to believe as catholics that when we die we are judged on our merits and either make it to heaven, or go to purgatory, or if we totally reject God we go to hell. So if there are truly ghosts sticking around, which group would you assume they would be in? It would seem to me that they would have to be evil, I have posted here several times what the Catechism says about divination or attempting to contact ghosts, even tarot cars, daily horoscopes, consulting a palm reader or a clairvoyant are all expresslly forbidden as they are placing other beliefs before God. I do not see the attraction folks, of course if one believes in God he would have to believe in satan too. I would say that all these interests in these practises are temptations from the deciever to distract us from God, dangerous stuff to mess with. ed
Nihil Obstat
At the very least Ed, it's been suggested that God certainly may allow souls to return to earth during their purgatory, for some reason or another. Some people take this even farther. Personally I'm not decided on all the finer points. Of course extreme prudence is always necessary, because there is the distinct possibility that it is demons (not damned souls, but demons) that are responsible. Have you read anything by Fr. Gabriele Amorth? He addresses it briefly, but has a very interesting perspective.

You assume they are evil, but that is simply your assumption and not shared by all. I think they are souls in purgatory and need our prayers, as the stories from many saints will attest. So if I am at location reputed to be haunted I will be sprinkling holy water and offering prayers for the release of those concerned.
dominicansoul
my office is haunted. when i have to work late into the night, the 11 story building I work in is totally emptied. The suite I work in is emptied. After a while, I begin to see white shadows. These ghosts roam around the office suite and start making lots of noises... things fall off people's desk, bumps and knocks are heard, chairs move...and lights turn out without any explanation. I immediately start praying the Rosary out loud, which neither stops the noises, nor seems to make the shadows disappear. I assume they must be good souls, because the Rosary does not immediately vaporize them... I'm not the only one who experiences this phenomenon, several of my coworkers have shared the same exact experiences. Does it frighten us? Heck ya! But work is work, and we of the living still need to pay our bills...

sacredheartandbloodofjesus
Priests have said these types of things can open you up to the activity of evil spirits.
Lounge Daddy
Speaking of ghosts, it seems the ghost of William S. Burroughs may have been burglarizing yogurt and sex toys shops. No joke. (Well, not entirely. I think it's a hilarious story.)
