When I started learning how to skate I sorta had to choose between hockey skates, or figure skates. I chose hockey skates because I wanna play hockey and I can't see myself doing those jump in the air and spin around things.

And incidentally THE US BEAT CANADA 6-5 AT THE WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!

You forgot to mention speedskates, by the way. :saint:

Which is better? Neither, objectively speaking. It's a matter of personal opinion and I love them both. Hard to compare two completely different sports. I am most passionate about hockey and tend to follow that closest, myself.

How about those World Juniors, though, that was pretty neat! :) Granted, USA doesn't win as often as countries like Canada, but it's nice to have something to smile about once in a while (with whatever teeth are left, anyway).

Speed skating looks fun, but where do you find those huge indoor tracks??

They're around. You need to look. Not all cities have a track. Many Olympic calibre skaters will move and train long term in a different country... (especially Canada)
The best in the world happens to be on my campus. ^_^ (The one pictured.)

The last few minutes & OT of that USA Canada game was i n t e n s e.

Personally I'm a fan of playing hockey in figure skates. Or watching my little bro try to figure skate in hockey skates.

Well, I'm sure if you get a hard enough hit you could theoretically get sent slying into the air and spinning around.....

BTW, did anyone see that episode of "1000 ways to die" where the "tough guy" ended up getting his carotid artery cut by a skate of a guy that got knocked over?

That's happened twice in the NHL. Both times to goalies. Once the carotid, and once to the jugular. Both very bad, but the players ended up perfectly all right.
Absolutely gruesome to watch. Turns my stomach seeing it.

It's almost as bad as the "Iron Lotus" scene from the great movie "Blades of glory"
