southern california guy
I've got a simple "home gym" set up at my parents house (I'm trying to get my parents exercising too). It's just a barbell, "squat bar", power rack, and adjustable bench. Perhaps a couple dumbbells would complete it but it's not bad for now. I also belong to the Ice-o-plex. And they have a complete weight room. Anyway I had been doing squats so that's a loaded "squat bar" in the picture. It works well. And it's MUCH more comfortable than just setting a heavy barbell on your back!! As a youth my home gym consisted of a door frame, I would stand between it with my hands downward at my side and press my hands outward till I contacted the door frame and press as hard as I could and hold it for five minutes, then I would put my palms against the top and do the same. Then I would do the same with my elbows at my side with my hands upward against the frame. Next I would place my right fist in my left palm and push, then do the left fist against my right palm. I would repeat these actions for up to two hours , this took many months to build up to this amount of time as these exercises are deceptively tough. My favorite was running, I would run this block of sorts every morning starting at 5:00 it was six miles around these four roads in the country, a great way to start the morning. Now at 49 years old my legs ache and I am fat, but I earned it ! ed
Maximilianus
Eh, it's okay...get rid of those heavy looking disk things, remove that padding looking stuff and replace them with a heavy, double-end and speed bags and you'll be set.

AccountDeleted
So, before home gyms, didn't people used to actually do work like lift heavy bales of hay or something? I remember when I was a horse trainer that I had to carry 50-75 pound bags of grain, and really heavy bales of alfalfa and nice light bales of grass hay. Oh yeah, and 50 pound Western saddles and 25 pound English saddles and, well, you get the picture... You know, you should just get a horse or two, and then you won't need a home gym! Winchester
You'd have to have some speed in the car to push that stuff back enough to fit.
KeenanParkerII
Sweet deal, but why do you have those funny shoulder pads on your barbell? Whenever I see guys using that I'm like ?? Anyways, can't wait till I have a house and can put my own gym in it!

You don't even have to hold onto the bar to squat it. And if you go ridiculously heavy -- which everybody has to at some point -- you don't end up with swollen bruises on your back. I don't find squatting with 400-600 lbs comfortable at all.. . Okay, I've gotten wimpy but I still get the exercise effects when using the padded squat bar. I used to compete in powerlifting and squats were never my favorite exercise. But it seems that for just about any sport they're the best exercise. [/quote] Trufax, I always have a big red mark on my shoulders afterwards. But can you still use the bar for curls and presses with the shoulder pads on it? Not sure I'd want to invest in two barbells.
