Small observation,

I posted 2 stories within some minutes of one another. One is the above which is both worrying and sad the other was a"good news" story about the first democratically elected president of the largest Islamic country in the world and how he often defended the freedom of Christians.Gus Dur to his credit sought peace with the Islamic rebels in Banda Aceh and always supported the religious freedom of Christians. In times of crisis, the possibility of terrorist attacks against churches, he urged members of his Muslim organization, the Nahdlatul Ulama to promote protection and vigilance, to defend the Christian communities. Thanks to him the Nahdlatul Ulama has become the most important (and largest) Islamic organization, open to dialogue with other religions.

No one sought to comment on this "good news" story but got all in a lather about the above. I just wonder

I'd give you a plus one for this if I had it, Fr. Cappie.

Every religion is capable of something like that. Every human has the capacity for evil and mistreatment of others. You are aware that in the Papal States Jews used to be forced into Ghettos and made to stand outside churches listening to sermons?

How terrible that those jews suffered such persecution for simply being a Jew in a Catholic country.
What's wrong with forcing them to listen to sermons? I want everybody to convert to Catholicism.

I'm not 'going after' anyone. My point was that it is easy to make snarky comments about the Catholic Church's claim to be a religion which teaches altruistic love for one's neighbor and peace, at least until Christ return with a vengeance, given the affinity with and support for many Catholics lay people and high ranking Church officials gave to the European fascist movements, most people here would correctly point out the logical disconnect between the individual actions of come of the net population of Catholics who have ever lived, and the Catholic religion as a whole, in all its localized and official forms. HCF would be the first to point this out. Yet she will do the very same thing for other faiths. At east those faiths she has some personal hatred of.
Yeah, I figured that was your point.

I for one would like to konw more about the picture. When was it taken? Who are the clergy involved? If a few priests molest children that doesn't mean the whole church or the Pope supports that?

I always find the mindset that Hitler was in bed with the Catholic Church as laughable. Why in the fuzzy blue cushion factory would Hitler want anything to do with a Church who's saviour and God is a Jew? Maybe those clergy were only pandering to the Nazis to save Jewish lives? Who knows?

The fact is, you're right, as a human insititution the Catholic Church has done some horrific things. But that doesn't mean every Catholic can be held accountable for events that happened 70, 700 or 1000 years ago. We still have every right to criticise other faiths that commit acts of aggression.

There's over a billion Catholics.

Give everyone of them a gun and a grenade and we can take over the world. The Pope will be our Supreme Dictator and none will oppose him.

It's the ghettos part that's more objectionable, to me anyway.

HCF,

I cannot honestly believe that you have missed my point. You seem to judge Islam by one standard and your own religion by another. That is what I find most objectionable.

This thread is about the topic of Christian persecution in Saudi Arabia. For whatever reason, you have decided to extend the thread topic to my overall opinion of Islam. Why not just focus on the article Cappie has posted, and discuss it?

Yes, and I find it strange that Ora believes I ignore or make excuses for corrupt Catholics.

He said you have one standard for your religion and another set of standards for another. This is true. I can point to specific instances where this is the case. You position on stoning being an obvious one.
