Computer Surgery

So for the past few months my computer was making a weird noise. After looking at it for a bit, I figured out that it was my fan so I decided to open up my computer to look at it. Three hours later, after literally disassembling the entire thing, I finally got to the fan which was basically under the motherboard. Obviously my laptop was not designed to get the fan out. <_< I examined the fan as best as I could but was unable to really see much. I could tell it was dusty so I used an air compressor to shoot some air into the fanwork and kick some dust out. Hoping that would solve the noise problem I put it back together which took 1.75 hours and left me with 7 extra mystery screws :detective: . After praying, I pressed the power button and it came back to life...with the same old noise as before with the added bonus of being much slower. :funeral:

I ordered a new fan part from VIVO Technology which saved me about $25 as HP wanted to charge me much more for the same part. There's capitalism in action. After the new part came in, and armed with the prior experience of disassembling and assembling my laptop, I set out to install the new fan and make sure all the connections were solid.

After 1.75 hours, the table I was working on looked like this:

Table covered with the many pieces of my laptop, bowls of teeny tiny screws, and labels.

The old fan on bottom and the replacement on top.

After taking a few minute break, I put in the new fan, and began the slow process of assembling my computer. After about 40 minutes, I was 5 minutes from finishing when I looked over and realized that I had forgotten to put a piece back in that went on the bottom. :censor:

I had no choice but to disassemble my laptop again. >:( Twenty minutes later, the forgotten piece was back in, and I was again on my way out of the darkness.

30 minutes later, the laptop was completely back together with only one extra mystery screw. After sprinkling it with holy water and saying a prayer, I pressed the power button, and.....

...the noise was gone and the computer was back to it's old speed. :nerd:

Anyone else have fun experiences of computer hardware?

I've been taking things apart since I was old enough to hold a screw driver. Feeling competent enough to fix your own stuff is a great feeling of power and control.

The internet at Benedictine can be annoying to deal with at my residence hall. They don't have wireless and sometimes you have to wait before the internet starts working again, sometimes even over an hour. <_<

I had a fan problem with my Macbook Pro. Took it to the Apple authorized service providers, had it replaced for free.

I took apart an old XBox the other day to install Linux on it. Only to find out that the version 1.6 motherboard in it was the only version that did not support a Linux install...

I disassembled The Statue of Liberty one night as a prank.

At my last job, I did stuff like that all the time. Disassembling laptops is a PITA, truly. I don't get to do that with computers all that much these days.

I just bought a repair manual for my 1998 VW Jetta (Winter car; will daily drive some during rest of year), though... Once I'm confident that it won't snow again, I'll attempt to replace the struts and the exhaust. (That way, I'll have my trusty 350Z as backup in case I have to leave the car in 100 pieces!) I'll probably need more tools, though.

Computers... ah good times. I remember ripping apart towers and using other old technology to build slightly better computers. Reinstalled OSs a lot... had fun installing hard drives, then struggling to get it to boot cause of the data strips not being in right. :pinch: What can I say, I've been there.

I had a battery problem with my Macbook. Called up apple, tinkered with it a bit, and they sent me a brand new one.

St. Catherine of Siena took a flying leap off of my bookshelf at school and broke the O key on my laptop. Apparently, to replace one key, you have to replace the whole keyboard. It was really fun. :))

Was either of these under warranty? My computer had a one year warranty but it's about 2 years old or so.
