Thy Geekdom Come
+J.M.J.+ what does "God of hosts", "Lord God of hosts", etc. mean? is He only the God of party hosts/hostesses?
Television hosts, actually. Hosts is the best English translation we have of the Hebrew word sabaoth. The original word seems not to be easy to translate (the Latin prayers of the Church simply transliterate the Hebrew word instead of translating it: "Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus, Deus Sabaoth"). The general consensus is that the meaning is something along the lines of "vast multitudes" or "armies." A looser translation might be "nations." The general idea is that He is Lord of all. The idea of a God who was Lord of all and not of just a specific land was foreign to pagan nations and one of the beliefs that set the Hebrews apart. God bless, Micah
