Holy Day Of Obligation Announcement

I don't think it's a day of obligation here, but I am sure I can find a parish to go to mass then. I think I have an exam that day. We'll see :saint:

We're having 8am, 12pm, 7pm. I'll go to 8am, then go to work late and stay late, then off to an Alpha Phi Sigma community service program.

So, I was happy that my pastor addressed the Holy Day of Obligation for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in his letter in the bulletin this week, until I finished reading it. This is what he said, (emphasis mine):

I think maybe you emphasized the wrong portion of your pastor's letter. The first paragraph seems to indicate all the excuses people will use, and the second he says (as I understood it) "yes, God will forgive you but you should still go." "This is so central to our faith that the obligation to attend mass cannot be dispensed by local bishops." that seems to me like he's urging everyone to attend. I would have liked to have seen a bolder statement like "You're supposed to go and if you don't it's a sin" (tell it to me straight haha), but I didn't feel like he was giving anyone a free pass to skip Mass.

Or maybe I just misunderstood the point in you posting that letter...

+1 (in spirit)

On a second read I think you are right. Especially with that, "This is so central to our faith that the obligation to attend mass cannot be dispensed by local bishop." And I think you're right also in that he certainly didn't come off as forceful enough in making his point (hence the confusion on this thread). But I don't think he intended anything bad by it.

Forgive me for doubting the bishop. First impressions and careless reading is something that has contributed to the theological problem I've put myself in the last 3+ years. Though I don't doubt that my initial post still applies to a great many situations in parishes today.

Thy Geekdom Come

Priests are unfortunately notorious for trying to say "come to Church" without saying "you ought to come to Church."

Unfortunately, the slip-up that was made here is likely to be repeated, especially by those that could really care less and just skim the bulletin.

Our chaplain didn't announce it at all at our college tonight. He probably forgot--in fact, I'm willing to bet anything he did, he does things like that. But still, sad. I'm going Tuesday afternoon so I can stay home and watch Charlie Brown that night.

I guess I might be the only one taking advantage of the Vigil Mass tomorrow night at 6pm.

Well thankfully mine does. I didn't find out until today. Msgr. told us and I breathed a sigh of relief. If I hadn't found out, it would have been bright and early 6:15am.

Piccoli Fiori JMJ

For some reason, only the Polish community gets an evening Mass on the actual feast day in my parish. I also loved how it seemed that the Holy Day fell on Monday in our bulletin. Pretty good explanation of a Holy Day though.
Holy Day of Obligation Evening Mass Monday

Tuesday, December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. THIS IS A HOLY DAY, the Patrional Feast of the United States and of our Diocese of Rockford. With some Holy Days, if they fall on a Saturday or Monday, the obligation to worship is dispensed by the bishops, but since this Holy Day is our National Feast, it is always a Holy Day of Obligation of Worship, even though it falls on a Saturday or Monday. That means Catholics are obliged to participate in the Holy Day Mass or they seriously sin.

Because we normally celebrate the English Mass (in anticipation) on the evening before the Holy Day, our Mass is on Monday Evening (December 7th) at 7:30 PM. There are also English Masses at 7 AM and 9:30 AM on Tuesday for those who can make them, but the 7:30 PM Mass on Tuesday Evening is in Polish.

In a worse case scenario, even though it is in another language, it fulfills your obligation to worship. So plan today on what you need to do for this Holy Day.
