zunshynn
So, I was happy that my pastor addressed the Holy Day of Obligation for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in his letter in the bulletin this week, until I finished reading it. This is what he said, (emphasis mine):
It seems that Holy Days of Obligation have fallen into disfavor in the past few years. It's not an issue of faith as far as I can see, it's just that our lives have become so busy that we're not inclined to come to Mass on a busy weekday (night). Besides, we say that the month of December is our busiest month. Certainly, God understands our situation and he'll give us a break on this feast of the Immaculate Conception. Yes, God is very merciful and he'll forgive us this lapse of attendance on December 8th. The problem isn't with God, it's with us who are missing out on a beautiful celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Immaculate Conception is a solemnity recalling that the Virgin Mary was sinless from the moment of her conception. This teaching of the Church has been a part of our tradition since the early days of the Christian community. The wisdom of the Magisterium stated that the Mother of God was chosen to be without sin as she was chosen to be the Mother of God. This is so central to our faith that the obligation to attend mass cannot be dispensed by local bishops. Please join us on December 8th at 7 am, 9 am, 6 pm or 7:30 pm in Spanish. Faithfully, Fr. ____ _____
 Edited December 6, 2009 by zunshynn
Archaeology cat
I just wish it were a Holy Day of Obligation here. Seems like a lot of the ones we have are moved to Sunday, too.

Especially days like Corpus Christi and the Acension, the proper day being very theologically important.

The reason the United States does is because it's our country's patronal feast. I think most other places in the world that also celebrate it as a holy day of obligation also do so because of particular patronage or traditional devotion to the Immaculate Conception in their country. MC IMaGiNaZUN
I bet the 7am English (which will probably be all the senior citizens) or 7:30pm in Spanish will be the most packed...
Actually it'll be the 9 am... That one is usually the one that gets the senior citizens... our seniors like to sleep in. (there is regularly a daily mass at 7 am and 9 am). Plus they'll have the parochial school attending that one. The 7 am is the people that regularly go before work... probably about 15 usually. homeschoolmom
Our parish will have masses at 6 am, 8:30 am (school mass) and 7 pm. I wish I could convince my dc to go to the school mass, but they will probably want to go in the evening. I'm whiped out in the evening.

Although I have class tomorrow so I can't go to that one anyway. Edited December 6, 2009 by zunshynn
