Nihil Obstat
Kerry King (who writes most of the lyrics) is still a 16-year-old at heart. What did you expect? You get used to it after a while. Metal aims to be extreme in all areas, and if that involves writing songs about nunrape or suicide or whatever then so be it. And how is it unhealthy? If anything, being sheltered to the darker side of the world is more unhealthy. Don't like it, don't listen. Simple as that.
So what if a guy wrote racist/neo-Nazi songs, or someone who listened to them extensively? It's all good as long as they aren't serious, right? Don't want to shelter them from the controversy.

I don't listen to them, personally, but as long as they don't physically harm anyone else I have nothing against them expessing their views. I don't want to pickle my brain in graphic, totally gratuitous images of depravity, violence and death. My curiosity is over why any thinking human being would listen to it. Your thought that by not drinking in a constant stream of filth you might be sheltered from the darker side of the world is asinine and sans merit. A lot of media covers dark topics without going into the kind of detail which is grisly and frankly disrespectful of the true import of these things. Try PBS. What we listen to is POWERFUL. Psychotherapists use guided imagery all the time to treat people with phobias, post traumatic stress, anxiety etc. When I was in the hospital, my surgeons had Belleruth Naparstek piped into the or because their studies found it produced brain activity beneficial to healing. What we listen to changes the brain. Sometimes permanently. We are what we eat. Your brain is what you feed it, good or bad. ParadiseFound
How would you feel if you had a son who was writing these sorts of songs, but told you that he "didn't really mean it" and was "just out to shock people"?
I'm fine with songs about people being brutally murdered but I draw the line at people using racist ideology purely for shock value. The reason? Take Cannibal Corpse lyrics, for an example. They are very hard to take seriously. If you asked the members of Cannibal Corpse if they genuinely wanted to force feed someone broken glass or mummify someone in barbed wire the answer would be a definate 'no'. The lyrics are fantastical. Racist lyrics, on the other hand, could be easily misinterpreted as genuine. I probably haven't explained myself very well, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
I don't listen to it.
Well, I don't understand why any thinking human being would want to listen to Justin Bieber. But they do, in their millions. I will respond to that with a quote from a very wise man: 'What is this garbage you're watching? I want to watch the news.' 'This IS the news.' I like it because it implies that what you can find on the news is generally worse than what you can find in supposedly controversial pieces of art, literature and music. Clearly, metal doesn't have negative effects on the vast majority of its fanbase. Otherwise we'd all be serial killers and church arsonists. But metalheads are generally the most friendly, down to earth and genuine people you could possibly hope to meet.
Seven77
It's very shallow and foolish to think that its ok to listen to lyrics that advocate murder and rape as long as the artists don't really mean it. What the heck? That's the wack compartmentalization mentality/philosophy that condones abortion. Let's get with the program.

Nihil Obstat
What if some Phatmassers went around saying "Paradise Found should be murdered!" and then detailing a variety of brutal inhuman ways to do it? When you challenge them on it, they say "well it's just for shock value. We don't *really* want to kill you." I guess that's ok, right?
