The whole liturgy - according to tradition - is supposed to be sung. It is good to have hope.

The Eucharistic Prayer has always been recited in the West. :)

I pray that if anyone is thinking of checking out the Catholic Church, they try another Mass.
Eastern Churches do not celebrate the divine liturgy more than once a day. If a person misses the divine liturgy he should attended one of the hours.

In the ancient Church it was chanted, even when it was done in a low voice.

If an Eastern Catholic misses the only Eastern Divine Liturgy celebrated on a Sunday, he should attend a Roman Rite Mass. :)

Can you provide more information on this?

An Eastern Catholic is free to attend a Roman Rite Mass if he wishes, but he is not required to do that.

You can read almost any book by Fr. Taft, Fr. Bouyer, Fr. Cyprian Vagaggini, and practically any other good liturgical scholar, and it will cover the topic. The anaphora was originally sung out loud, but eventually the "secret" form took hold, which is why you will see legislation as early as the 6th century trying to keep it chanted aloud (e.g., the liturgical rubrics issued by the Emperor Justinian in the early to mid 6th century). The chanting of the anaphora among the clergy in the sanctuary is still normative in the Byzantine Churches, according to the liturgikon, even if it is not always done. The Orthodox are better at following liturgical tradition than the Eastern Catholics, and I say this as an Eastern Catholic.

Why did the "secret form" as you put it, take hold in the West for so long?
It took hold in both East and West, and is a venerable tradition in its own right.

As to why it became normative, I think it has to do with a growing sense of the mysterium tremendum. But even when done in a low voice it is still chanted aloud. I have sometimes been able to hear the priest chanting the prayers in a low voice when I visit Orthodox Churches.

Well, when it finally does come out, I hope they have a missal and they strongly urge people to buy one and use it at Mass.

Perhaps the parishes can use this as an opportunity to properly catechize people on the Mass.

However, my guess is that there's going to be a lot of confusion, as people will respond with old responses.

I wish that they would use real iconography on the Missal instead of line drawings.

Yes, I get the same "That 70's Show" vibe.
