The Military

So I'm in the process of discerning whether or not to join the Army. I want to go help restore peace in the middle east and help eliminate oppressive regimes so the world can be a safer place. I also want to protect the United States from tyrants like Saddam. I'm going to graduate from college in a year and I want a big adventure that I'll never forget.

I want to know what yall think about this.

I wont join the Army. I know some one in it and hear his stories abour Iraq all the time. Plus I am not too keen on the army. Govts dont always make the right choices about war.

Kudos to you for feeling the need to serve your country. I have a cousin who joined the Navy about 6 months ago and she loves it. I have a nephew who became a Marine about the same time and I've seen it transform him from a wild and crazy teenager to a respectible young man. I also have a very dear friend serving a year in Iraq. Where would we be without our military? I'll tell you: We would be overrun by terrorist thugs. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I served four years in the Marines. My advice to you is this: If you are going to do it, make beaver dam sure you know your faith well and have a strong spiritual life before you go. The temptations are endless. The vast majority of people you will serve with are godless heathens. If you happen to find someone who actually practices religion to some extent he will most likely be a radical evangelical. Know your faith well (and love it) and you will be fine. You'll come out a better man. Go in with a weak faith and it will destroy you.

That's just my experience. Others may have a different opinion. In any case, pray hard about it. God Bless!!

I work for the Air Force, my friends are Air Force military, and I have one friend that just married into the Navy. I highly respect them and what they do. Just know what you are getting into before hand, and be strong in your faith.

And just so you get a differing opinion I've met two guys that have just come back from Iraq that are both in support of the war and couldn't wait to go back and serve. I posted a story about one of them some time ago. He was guarding a Catholic orphanage outside of Baghdad. He couldn't say enough about all the good that was being done there, as well as how he couldn't stand all the negative media that is being spread here in the states.

I agree with what PSPX said (much to my surprise :P ). If you have faith, make sure you are very well grounded in it before you go.

Also, I would suggest you make sure you get everything you can out of the recruiter. When I went it in, they had a high quota on the recruiters for medics, so I became a medic. I found out later that with my test scores they would have sent me to nursing school.....

PSPX is exactly right with this. I have two brothers in the military, one in the Marines (6 yrs) and one in the Air Force (2 yrs.). They've both faced serious challenges to their faith, and have responded to it in different ways, some good and some bad. One major factor I've noticed with them is that one sought out Christian support, and the other didn't. The one that didn't has really struggled much more in his faith and has made some really bad choices.

Otherwise, I think it's a noble pursuit. Just be sure you know what you're getting into.

I feel obliged to serve my State. But not in the armed forces. I am more inclined to do missionary work (something like docs without boarders or the Peace Corp or a Catholic group) and better the Nation and the world by Peace and not war.

Does anyone else think it is cool that the Peace Corp was formed under a Catholic Pres?

that's what I thought too. :sadder:
