You'll almost never see a politician vote against his party, but in the US it's normal for a few to do so. Our party whips are more intimidating I guess. The way the voting system works, if a politician voted against his party on something important, they probably wouldn't let him run with their party in the next election... and if he had any kind of power in parliament, he'd suddenly find himself a back-bencher. The only Canadian politician I even know of is your PM, Stephen Harper, and the only Canadian political pundit I know of is Mark Steyn, but that's just because he's a dual citizen who fills in for Rush.
