is it in Canon law or elsewhere that a family must be formally registered at a parish?

No you don't need to be regestered formally in a parish because canon law simply says that as a general rule "Can 518 As a general rule, a parish is to be territorial, that is, it is to embrace all Christ's faithful of a given territory."

The fact that you live in a certain area makes you a member of that parish with the rights and responsibilities.
