Livin_the_MASS
2 Timothy 2: 14-19 "Remind people of these things and charge them before God to stop disputing about words. This serves no useful purpose since it harms those who listen. Be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without deviation. Avoid profane, idle talk, for such people will become more and more godless, and their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have deviated from the truth by saying that (the) resurrection has already taken place and are upsetting the faith of some. (Or each other) Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands, bearing this inscription, "The Lord knows those who are his"; and, "Let everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord avoid evil." I've noticed the more I've been on the debate table that the topics get changed and before you know it, we are playing with words! Then this leads to jabbing at the Catholic Faith in some way shape or form. (or each other) One thing I can think of that has been posted more than once is "doc dump" If you ask me charity should run both ways!! I agree yes Charity, if we do this without love it is for nothing. But you have to agree that alot of the threads turn into and then before you know it we are jabbing at each other. Charity must be practiced on both ends. I have seen both sides attack! ( Yes I include myself, I love The Catholic Church and I defend it, sometimes I lash out!) Doesn't the above say stay away from usless disputes? Some have complained about my post because I leave them short. Well the Truth is the Truth and there is only One Truth! Why babble on for an half an hour about one word. You either accept the Truth or you reject it.(saying with charity) I'm confussed? Someone help me out with this issue. If you respond please respond with charity. Because I am posting this out of love and concern. Justified Saint
Thank you for the reminder Jason. Sometimes our zeal for truth can lead us into uncharitableness, but it is important to remain good witnesses and discuss in Christian kindness. popestpiusx
"Always be ready to give a reason for the joy that is in you". Sometimes the reasons casue arguments. Human speech is made of words, Jason. Words have real meanings with consequences (unless you are a nominalist). We do debate over words because the wrong words lead one to error. cmotherofpirl
We don't need disputes or debates. We do need discussion which can lead to further understanding.
popestpiusx
Very well mother, but discussions use words as well. Everything I said still stands true. Words have definate meanings and in theology and philosophy, accuracy is everything.
cmotherofpirl
Preciseness is essential. Before you have a conversation you must have agreement on definitions.
