StColette
Wisconsin hunters donated 7,627 deer to venison donation programs last year. A total of 140 meat processors representing 65 counties participated.
That's a whole lot of deer!
In Illinois more than 106,000 pounds of venison was donated through the program during last year’s deer season.
Nihil Obstat
I've never eaten deer before. I have tried bison though.

StColette
Apparently deer meat donations happen in almost every state through the Sportsmen Against Hunger program. I've never heard of it, but what an awesome program!
Nihil Obstat
I wonder if you can eat giraffe. Or lion. Or elephant. I find these pictures sad. I'm not against hunting by any means. Maybe it's just because they're exotic animals to us? I don't know... that's weird.
JimR-OCDS
Again you are entitled to your personal opinion about your state, but don't generalize to the rest of us. In Pennsylvania we do hunt to feed our families, licenses are $20 or under, and the first day of hunting season the schools mostly close, because so many teachers, subs, and kids are in the woods. Every year over 200,000 meals of vension are made available to Pa food banks, from donated meat from hunters. People stock up their deep freezes for winter, and supply most of their relations with free meat.
You're trying to tell me, that without hunting, your family would not have meat to eat? JimR-OCDS
I just want people to be clear about my position. I have no problem with people who hunt, whether for sport and especially for food. Its just that in hunting, there is a level of violence associated with it, and its my belief as Thoreau stated, that men who grow, will grow out of it. I do believe its a spiritual thing.
It could be also that we're so used to seeing these animals as endangered or animals like them as endangered that we're more prone to find it very wrong to hunt such animals. Again, I would feel differently about the killing of such an animal if it were done by a tribe or tribal person and it was necessary for their food supply. Most tribes have sources of meat though such as goats, pigs, or cows that they use for their meat supply. It's probably very rare that they kill an exotic animal (at least of the large breed variety) for food.
Nihil Obstat
Besides the cost factor, I'd argue that hunting meat is far more humane than commercial meat production. Unless we're talking free range, which is most common around me.
