They couldn't kill it the first nite, because it didn't offer a clear shot.
It did however come extremely close to the bait AND THEM. It sat down, got up and walked away peacefully. The bear spared their life. Not saying this guy didn't endanger the mess out of his son's life. When he did finally shoot the bear, it happened to stumble in a different direction before slowly bleeding to death.

I'm afraid that I don't quite see what your problem with hunting is. Hunting is perfectly safe when done properly...

I don't have a problem with hunting. But, if at all possible, bears should be spared from the process, because they are awesome.

If you think it is perfectly safe to bring your son close to a 500 lb. bear, then you could tell me why. :detective:

I don't personally have a problem with taking a kid hunting, even for large and dangerous animals. Danger abounds in all sorts of normal activities -- driving, riding a bike, participating in contact sports, etc. I've written about about kids who died playing football.

With proper precautions, bear hunting is no worse than other activities.

Terra,

This bear was shy, but other bears might be in a foul mood. I'm still not enlightened to the point that I think being up-close with a bear is anywhere near the level of driving or playing football. I'm open to specific reasons from you or anybody.

Peace,
Paddington

At first, I was just gonna post this in lame board and try to make some funny off it, but when I read it, I realized that I had an opinion about it. Not just that bears are super-awesome and they pwn. But, stuff aside, if he is going to eat hundreds of pounds of meat from this, then cool. Seriously cool. I still don't believe that it was safe.

Are you objecting to this based off of safety or concern for the animal?

I do wish people would acknowledge bears' special awesomeness, and that is how it started for me. But, yea, I question the safety of it for the obvious reasons and will accept hunting safety enlightenment from whoever knows stuff. If he is going to eat this animal, then I respect the food part. If he is not and did it for "sport" or "leisure" then I think he is misguided or something like that.

I object to the fact the bear doesn't have a gun to shoot back. I object to hunting that doesn't have a purpose, and this qualifies.

that and how they hunted the bear. i mean you dont walk into someones house and raid all the beer from there fridge right? then why sneak in and shoot a bear 5 feet from where he sleeps and eats?

if they actually came across this bear in the woods etc, REALLY hunting for it, thaat would be better than basically just trapping a bear that big and cool.

This teaches us all a valuable lesson in being vigilant. Remember, not even your house is safe. Ever. Carry weaponry at all times. Enter any room like there is a squad of Spetsnaz waiting for you inside. Anything out of the ordinary must be met with overwhelming and ludicrously excessive force- ask questions when the potential threat has been neutralized or proven safe. Above all, remember that every bump and creak IS WITHOUT A DOUBT someone sneaking around waiting to kill you. Everybody in the entire world wants you dead, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Pity the bear didn't know this...

My dad thinks people should hunt like the Native Americans did (and some still do). Learning how to track the animal, etc. not just bait the animal and sit there in a tree. He disagrees with "deer farms" as well. He thinks deers on deer farms should be armed to shoot back, that would make it a real sport lol

Hunting bear == morally acceptable
Hunting, for example, deer with young son == morally acceptable
Hunting bear with young son == dangerous

Just my $0.02.
