Extended Unemployment Benefits

I just heard on the news that the senate passed the legislative bill to extend unemployment benefits for people still looking for jobs. It's the one good thing about Democrats, I guess, since all 5 Rep. voted against it.

I agree with the Republicans on this one. Social services for unemployed people should happen on the private, local level. The government likes handing out benefits, because then it makes people who receive them beholden to them, which means more power and more control for the government.

In some situations, the extension of unemployment benefits actually leads to the extension of unemployment.

In some cases I agree, but that's not my case. ;) I'm still very active in my job search, looking every single day at job listings. I hate being out of work.

If people are abusing the benefits, they should do something about it...

Or as my relation put it when he heard the news, "why should I look for work when the government is paying me to stay home?".

Sad, but true. Benefits will always be abused in one form or another. :(

This looks like an expansion of what Bush began last fall.

I agree with Rush on this one.
Liberals measure compassion by counting the number of people who receive some kind of government help. ... I think compassion should be measured by how many people no longer need it. Helping people to become self-sufficient is much more compassionate than drugging them with the narcotic of welfare.
If neighbors had charity of the heart, we wouldn't need the heartless charity of the government.

You understand that unemployment benefits are paid for in full by corporations and employees? This isn't a handout.

So are government handouts. It's just a different route.

I think we're overlooking indentured servitude and workhouses as a possible solution.

[sup]One of the things that made the Great Depression so bad, was that when people lost their jobs, they lost
all of their spending power, even for basic necessities. The drop in economic spending across the board,
only help make the depression worse.

Today, thanks to Social Security and Unemployment Benefits, we not only keep the elderly and unemployed from destitution, but it helps keep money going back in to the main-street economy.

Usually having generous unemployment benefits is not all that great for the economy... it does gum up the works quite a bit. But this particular recession is so bad that I think an extension is warranted. Unfortunately we all know they are unlikely to cut the extension back once the coutnry gets back on its feet...

OF COURSE they are going to cut back the extension. These bills aren't in perpetuity. Unemployment will go back to what it was when the economy goes back to what itwas

That's not true Win. Govt handouts can and do go out to those who have never paid into the system. This is why you couldn't collect unemployment in Florida but you could collect welfare. You've paid to the state of Texas. If you lost your job as a male supermodel, Texas would look at what you made over the past year and decide if you can receive the minimum. If you made six grand last year, you wouldn't get much.

As much as I dislike unemployment, its not just charity
