.- Archbishop Robert J. Carlson and the Make-A-Wish Foundation helped one young boy to live his dream by experiencing, in part, what it’s like to be a priest for a day.

Eileen Haubrich said that her son, 11-year-old Brett, didn’t “want anything” like a trip to Disneyland or the chance to meet a celebrity when he was approached by Make-A-Wish Missouri.

“For years, he has loved the Mass and been religious,” she told the St. Louis Review. “He has such a good heart. He's a very caring boy.”

The foundation then asked what he wanted to do when he grew up. Brett said he wanted to be a priest, or else a doctor or an engineer.

....

Archbishop Carlson, who was standing nearby when Fr. Smith received the phone call from the Haubrich family, was enthusiastic about the idea and added a few additions of his own.

“He was throwing out ideas right and left, 'Let's do this, let's do that',” Fr. Smith said of the archbishop to the St. Louis Review. “He said, 'Put him in there; we'll wash his foot'.”
....
Brett is fighting a grade three brain tumor known as anaplastic astrocytoma, according to his GoFundMe page, set up by his therapy team to help his family cover his medical bills.

He is undergoing chemo and radiation therapy since brain surgery is not an option.

Oh how sweet! Maybe lots of prayer will help him get better. If not, at least he got this dream. Thanks for posting this heart warming story.

I wonder what's the youngest anyone has ever been ordained in history.

Within the Medieval church, it's about 10-12. 22 seems to be the youngest commonly done in the last century. Anything younger is reserved to the Holy See.

Pretty sure in order to be ordained you must have received the other sacraments (baptism, Eucharist, confirmation). Centuries ago people didn't receive the Eucharist until 14 (maybe 12 in some areas), so it couldn't have been younger than that. Unless there was some crazy situation at one point where that was all abused, who knows?

In the West...in the East they receive all 3 as infants.

You could totally have a sacramental extravaganza - ie confimation on monday, all the minor orders tuesday through thursday, diaconate on Friday and priestly ordination on saturday. I think we can argue it was rare, but sticking to the rules didn't always happen, and a true codified "canon law" as we conceive of it today, did not exist.

But on the topic of this post.  This was a very sweet thing for the boy.

Please pray any novenas or prayers for my son.  Please pray his brain tumor keeps shrinking and will not grow back.  He is the sweetest, kindest boy.  I trust in God's will and plan.  Prayers are appreciated very much by our family.

Thank you,

Eileen

I wonder what would be done if it was a little girl that wanted it. (Please note I agree with all male clergy). Just awkward position to be in. It's just pretend whether it's a boy or girl so... No harm done?

Yeah, I wondered that, too, actually. I thought maybe they wouldn't do it just because it might give the wrong idea to everybody. But I dunno... For a dying little girl who isn't actually going to become a priest... maybe they would.
