It was not super easy to find ones that were not $70, actually! There is a Calida L/s full length Cotton White Nightgown, but I refuse to pay that much for a nightgown, especially since I need 3 and the combined cost would be over $200!!! It's really because I am a cheapskate, but let's just attribute it to wanting to stay close to Lady Poverty!

They have the funniest pictures, and the prices are still high for a simple cotton nightgown, but I just want to get them ordered so they will be here with a lot of time to spare. I have had too many orders have complications when they are set to deliver in December, what with the crazy Holidays, so hopefully they will be here in November.

I think the 'Greek Bible/Catechism' handwritten add-on is in Dear Mistress' handwriting. I hope they don't expect me to read Biblical Greek as fluently as I did in High School (and even then, it was a slow operation.) Languages are hard to hold onto if you are employing them infrequently. Speaking of, I forget which book this is from, but there is the cutest story about a Poor Clare learning Latin for Mother Francis. Mother thought she knew Latin, so she asked her to teach Latin to the novitiate. The Sister did not know Latin, but I guess she thought, "Orders are orders!" She was Sister Cook as well at the time, so she got a Latin book and would teach herself Latin while she stirred the soup! I don't think I could have ever done that! Languages are difficult..

And that brings me to this point: Is it normal to be intimidated by how smart your community is? For example, if you look at the Benedictines of Mary, they have so many brilliant Sisters that had really successful intellectual careers before joining. This seems to be the case for many cloistered communities, and Roswell is no exception. I did well in college, but I still feel like I am just going to be plain old stupid compared to the nuns! It will be good for humility, but I wonder why most contemplatives are so smart? Is it the silence and peace that kind of 'frees' the mind and intellect that allows them to be more intelligent than your average person? Is it that you have to be super smart to enter or you won't persevere for some reason? I would ask the nuns on my next visit, but I am too embarassed to blurt out "Why are you all so smart???" I don't want them to think that I expect them to be dumb!

I feel the same way whenever I visit the community I'm discerning with! They're just so...deep. I think a lot of it probably does come from constant contemplation and union with God.

I know the feeling. Mother Mistress taught at a university in the US before she entered. One of the juniors has a PHD! I remember in lessons I was just going "Woah, how do they know so much?" But then they all go through the novitiate lessons for years, in one of our classes even one of the recently solemn professed sisters was there because the course is so long she hadn't finished it yet. That sister never went to university, she entered at 19. There will be sisters from all kinds of backgrounds, some intellectual some not. I remember when I first met Mother Mistress she was telling me about the two juniors and how wonderfully different they are. I do also think contemplation breeds an atmosphere where learning is perhaps easier than in the outside world because your mind is less taken up with distractions. The structure of religious life may well make it easier to study. But I definitely don't think you have to be super smart to enter!

Here is a site for warm, wool full-length (waist to toes) tights and socks (knees to toes) for people entering orders that have cold fall and winter seasons - http://warmlegwear.com/ - they are selling them at $22.50.

The kind PCs and Carmelites wear: brown, flat, not fancy, ankle strap, not overly expensive. I've looked at the sites at the Nun Trunk site and none of those really are what I'm looking for.

Not all Carmels wear these, nor do PC/PCCs. As far as I know, these are only made in certain Carmels like Sheffield in the UK and maybe by the Valpraiso/Elysburg Carmels here in the States? and not for the public.

Sandals these 2 orders or good Franciscans or Dominicans, etc wear.

I keep seeing sandals that are too fancy or not the right style. I did see some in my local Walmart back in June and thought I'd buy later - now I wish I bought them and another pair!
