Chiquitunga
St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, OCD (Edith Stein) Venerable MarÃa Felicia of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, OCD (not sure what the striped sash is) Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, OCD (from Light Love Life) note: this was not a custom at the time of St. Teresa of Jesus (of Avila) however. I'm not sure exactly when it began, but this seems to indicate it was the mid-1800's, http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/topic/129234-wedding-dresses-when-did-communities-start-using-them/

nikita92
Thank you for those photos!!! I think it would be a great idea if someone submitted a request to the TV show "Say YES to the dress" and have RANDY help pick out a beautiful traditional wedding gown for a young lady who is entering a community! That would be so awesome! I bet Kleinfeld's would be hard pressed and challenged to find a real traditional wedding dress suitable for the occasion! Chiquitunga
I had never seen this one! Chiquitunga
I have a question for Gracian (or anyone) if he happens to see this. Any idea when this custom began for Discalced Carmelites? I would guess it was around the time of the French Revolution, as Sr. Mary Catharine indicated it was for Dominicans here, http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/topic/129234-wedding-dresses-when-did-communities-start-using-them/ It was included at the beginning in this film on the Carmelites of Compiègne ~ http://www.gloria.tv/?media=88487 although they didn't research Carmel very well before making this. For one thing, they're wearing cord cintures like Franciscans :topsy:

What I know is that when the French Nuns founded the Carmels in the Philippines, they dressed their to be professed nun as brides. Nevertheless, it may have begun as custom common to cloistered community at that time. Gracian

Totally Franciscan
Is it just me or do those "brides to be" look absolutely miserable! LOL! They seriously do. Dern. I was thinking the same thing, ACS67. I was in the convent when The Nun's Story came out, and I watched it with my mother. She asked me if it was like that in my convent. I remember answering her saying yes it was, EXCEPT our community was all about JOY! No sour pusses in our convent! Franciscan don't you know!
